| Growth of digital set-top box industry depends on development of growth of broadcasting industry. The fact, that all area of broadcasting industry is adopting digital broadcasting technology, makes growth of the digital set-top box as vital. Furthermore, the digital set-top box has other applications such as two-directional transmission, recording, saving, electronic commerce, home banking, and etc. These additional applications make growth of the digital set-top box industry even higher than that of digital broadcasting industry.
The digital set-top box industry is a typical forming high-tech industry that its demand exceeds its supply. Also the digital set-top box industry can continue to grow against economy down fall because the industry is a key industry for building digital broadcasting infra. Many partnership industries such as contents provider, service provider, equipment manufacturer, and home electronics manufactures can share potential profit of the digital set-top box industry.
While world wide manufacture of the digital set-top box in year 1999 was only about twenty million units, expected manufacture in year 2004 is about sixty-five million units (seventy-five million units according to Dataquest). By observing manufacture during year 1999 to year 2004, growth of the industry is expected to be 26% in units and 15% in CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate). Market share of domestic manufactured satellite broadcasting set-top box in the world is as high as 50%. The digital set-top box industry became a very prospective industry.
The digital set-top box industry was created by digital industry revolution. Together with broadcasting industry, the digital set-top box industry became high growth basic home electronic industry. The industry has characteristics of both home electronic industry and broadcasting industry.
Therefore, the digital set-top box industry is expected to show characteristic of forming high-tech industry, which has higher demand than supply for few years. After that, the industry will mature and continue some level of growth by adding extra demands.
Currently, rapid digitalizing in broadcasting industry created rapid increase in digital broadcasting subscribers. More subscribers are expected since even higher increase of digital cable TV broadcasting service is expected. For many countries are planning to adopt digital broadcasting system, even more digital broadcasting subscribers are expected to join. In year 2005, including sixty million satellites broadcasting subscribers, total 222 million digital broadcasting subscribers are expected.
